Human rights activist, publisher, and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has openly criticized the official celebrations marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary, declaring that millions of citizens are in no mood to celebrate amid crushing poverty, soaring inflation, and widespread insecurity.
In a fiery Independence Day address, the outspoken activist stated that rolled-out official ceremonies and government speeches ring hollow for ordinary Nigerians battling intense economic hardship on a daily basis. Sowore emphasized that true independence should manifest as economic liberation, safety of lives and property, and equitable distribution of national resources, rather than lavish state banquets and speeches from political leaders.
Highlighting the harsh realities facing households across the country, Sowore pointed out that skyrocketing food prices, transport costs, and persistent security challenges in various regions have stripped everyday life of joy. According to the activist, asking citizens to celebrate national sovereignty while basic necessities remain out of reach for the working class reflects a deep disconnect between political elites and the masses.
“What exactly are ordinary Nigerians celebrating at 66?” Sowore questioned. “You cannot tell hungry, impoverished, and insecure people to roll out drums and cheer when they don’t know where their next meal will come from or whether they are safe in their own homes.”
Sowore called on Nigerians to transform their frustrations into constructive civic action, urging the populace to unite and demand accountable governance, systemic reforms, and immediate economic relief from the ruling class.
The hard-hitting commentary has sparked vibrant debates across social media platforms, with many citizens weighing in on whether national Independence Day should be a moment of grand celebration or sober national reflection.
