‎”No Consent, No Mining!” — FG Vows to Protect Host Communities from Exploitation

The Federal Government has reaffirmed that no operational mining licence will be validated or issued to prospective investors without the explicit written consent of host communities.

Speaking through representatives of the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development during a regional stakeholders’ summit, the government declared that host community consent forms the fundamental foundation for lawful mineral exploration and extraction across the country. The policy is designed to eliminate local conflicts, prevent environmental degradation, protect host populations from corporate exploitation, and guarantee a peaceful working environment for legitimate operators.

Addressing attendees at the mining summit, officials highlighted that for decades, Nigeria’s rich solid mineral potential was hampered by structural defects and weak enforcement of regulatory frameworks like the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act. Under the ongoing reforms led by Solid Minerals Development Minister Dr. Dele Alake, host community approval—alongside formal Community Development Agreements (CDAs)—is now a non-negotiable prerequisite.

“Their consent is the foundation for every licence,” officials stated, adding that any operator who attempts to bypass host communities risks immediate licence revocation and legal prosecution for illegal mining. The government emphasized that engaging local traditional rulers, youth organizations, and community leaders directly fosters mutual trust and ensures host populations enjoy tangible social infrastructure and economic benefits from natural resources in their backyards.

The firm stance has drawn praise from civil society organizations, environmental rights advocates, and community leaders across mineral-rich states, who see the policy as a vital step toward responsible resource governance and grassroots development.
