“Operation Rescue!” — IGP Deploys DIG and Two Commissioners to Imo Over Abducted NYSC Members

Following the shocking highway ambush and abduction of 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and passengers along the Owerri-Onitsha Road, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has taken decisive action by deploying top operational leadership to Imo State.

The Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, DIG Shehu Nadada, accompanied by two Commissioners of Police, has arrived in Owerri to assume direct command of tactical operations and intelligence gathering. The high-level deployment follows the October 1 ambush at Umunoha in Mbaitoli Local Government Area, where heavily armed gunmen intercepted transit vehicles, forced victims into the surrounding bush, and abandoned the buses.

Upon arrival, DIG Nadada executed an immediate on-the-spot assessment alongside Imo State Commissioner of Police, Audu Bosso, and other senior commanders. The police delegation reviewed active operational strategies, reassessed personnel strength, and ordered the immediate deployment of specialized tactical assets across identified forest hideouts and criminal hotspots throughout the state.

The joint rescue operation—working in close synergy with sister security formations including the Military and the Department of State Services (DSS)—is actively utilizing intelligence-led tracking to locate the abductors and secure the safe, unhurt release of all victims.

Assuring anxious families and the general public, DIG Nadada emphasized that the Police Force will sustain maximum operational pressure until every victim is safely rescued and the perpetrators are brought to book. Security authorities have also urged citizens to provide credible information while refraining from spreading unverified online rumors that could jeopardize ongoing operations.
