“Unfit for Office or Heartless Insults?” — APC and ADC Spar Over Amaechi’s Family Tragedy

The political atmosphere ahead of 2027 has turned fierce as the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) traded scathing words over comments by Rotimi Amaechi regarding his mother’s demise.

The controversy erupted after Amaechi, former Minister of Transportation and current ADC vice-presidential candidate, alleged in a television interview that high drug costs under President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies made it difficult to afford critical medication for his 89-year-old mother, Dame Ezinne Mary Amaechi, before her death in July.

Firing back, APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka issued a biting statement questioning how a former two-term governor, assembly speaker, and minister could claim an inability to afford healthcare after decades in public service. The APC argued that Amaechi’s statements demonstrated an incapacity to earn a living outside public office, declaring that “the presidency is not a soup kitchen” and claiming his comments proved his unfitness for national office.

Refusing to back down, the ADC Presidential Campaign Council hit back, scolding the ruling party for politicizing personal grief. The opposition party asserted that a mother’s death should never be used as political fodder, arguing instead that the test of good governance is whether ordinary citizens can afford healthcare and live safely.

As both camps trade barbs, the feud underscores the deepening rift between government defenders and opposition figures over the economic reality facing Nigerians.
