Argentine talisman Lionel Messi became the player with the highest number of goals for a single club on Tuesday when he scored the third goal for Barcelona to bring his tally to 644 goals, one ahead of Pele’s 643 which he equaled days ago, as his side defeated Real Valladolid 3-1.
The 33-year-old hit the milestone in the 63rd minute when he picked up Pedri’s backheel and slotted the ball past Valladodid’s goalkeeper Jordi Masip.
Brazil great Pele scored 643 goals in 19 seasons for Santos in his homeland between 1956 and 1974.
Even Messi couldn’t believe the wonder of breaking and setting such a tremendous record.
Messi scored his first goal for Barca in 2005 and has gone on to win 10 La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues.
Barcelona’s other goals were scored by Clement Lenglet and Martin Braithwaite in the first half.
Earlier on Tuesday, Atletico beat third-placed Real Sociedad 2-0 to three points clear of Real Madrid, who play Granada at home on Wednesday.
