Popular Nigerian comedian, actress, and academic Dr. Helen Paul has opened up about a deeply personal chapter of her life, revealing how intense criticism from people close to her husband, Femi Bamisile, nearly shattered her confidence and wrecked their marriage before it even began.
Speaking on her emotional journey, the humour merchant disclosed that several individuals in her husband’s circle—including close friends and former bosses—actively tried to talk him out of marrying her. According to Paul, critics questioned her suitability for the legal practitioner and academic, leaving her battling crippling insecurities during their courtship.
The harsh judgment eroded her self-esteem so badly that she avoided attending the same church as her husband out of fear of constant comparison. The self-doubt even followed her all the way to their wedding altar. “If we last two years in this marriage, I’ve tried. But if we last forever, then God is the one at work,” she recalled confessing to Femi on their big day.
Despite the overwhelming noise, Femi stood firmly by her side. Today, the power couple remains happily married, and Helen notes that overcoming those early trials completely reshaped how she views public opinion and self-worth.
