While the nation continues to celebrate the safe return of 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members abducted in Imo State, prominent rights advocacy group, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), is insisting that Nigerians deserve the full story behind their sudden release.
In a strong public statement, HURIWA commended the return of the traumatized youth but challenged security agencies to provide transparent answers regarding the exact circumstances surrounding the rescue operation in Amakohia Ubi Village.
The advocacy group raised critical questions about whether negotiations took place or if ransom was paid behind the scenes. More importantly, HURIWA queried why no arrests of the bandits or abductors were announced alongside the rescue news.
“If security agencies conducted a successful tactical rescue operation, where are the abductors?” HURIWA asked. “Rescuing the victims is a great first step, but it must not end there. To prevent future occurrences, the perpetrators who put these young Nigerians through a seven-day nightmare must be identified, tracked down, and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”
The organization also called on federal authorities to provide comprehensive medical and psychological support for the freed corps members to help them recover from the traumatic ordeal before continuing their national service journey.
Do you agree with HURIWA that security agencies should disclose the full details of how the corps members were freed? Share your perspectives in the comment section below!
