“Tears of Relief and Tough Questions!” — Freed NYSC Members Arrive Ibadan as Parents Speak Out

Relief and emotional reunions have swept through Ibadan, Oyo State, as the 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members abducted en route to their orientation camps were moved to the Department of State Services (DSS) headquarters for official debriefing.

While security agencies initially reported that a tactical operation led to their freedom, grieving and exhausted parents have come forward with shocking accounts, alleging that massive ransoms were pooled together to secure their children’s safety.

One distraught mother recounted the terrifying ordeal, revealing that the abductors initially demanded a staggering ₦50 million per child before negotiations brought the sum down. Her family was forced to borrow money, accept small contributions from relatives, and eventually gather ₦6 million to hand over to the kidnappers in order to see her son alive again.

Another parent, a farmer, expressed overwhelming joy at his son’s safe return but lamented the huge financial burden now hanging over his head, wondering how he will ever repay the millions borrowed under extreme pressure.

The arrival of the freed youth at the DSS facility marks the end of a terrifying seven-day nightmare, but it leaves behind urgent questions about security along transit routes for young Nigerians serving their fatherland.
