Nollywood has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actor Francis Duru at the age of 57.
The actor’s family announced his passing in a statement shared on his Instagram page on Friday, October 23, saying he died after a brief illness. The family did not disclose the exact date of his death or provide details about his burial arrangements.
The announcement has sparked sadness among fans and colleagues who grew up watching Duru bring memorable characters to life on screen. The Actors Guild of Nigeria also confirmed his death, describing him as a great thespian whose departure leaves a painful gap in the film industry.
Duru began his acting career in 1989 but became widely recognised after playing Ahanna in Amaka Igwe’s classic film Rattlesnake in 1995. He went on to feature in numerous productions, building a career that spanned more than three decades.
Beyond acting, he also served in a leadership role within the Actors Guild of Nigeria and received a United Nations Ambassador of Peace award in 2007.
His passing comes two years after the heartbreaking death of his 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, in August 2024. The family’s earlier loss made the news of Duru’s death especially painful for many who followed his personal journey.
For fans, his films and performances will remain part of Nollywood’s history. As tributes continue to emerge, many are remembering an actor who helped shape Nigerian screen entertainment across generations.
May his soul rest in peace.
