Peter Obi has called for the release of Rilwan Olawale, a supporter whose arrest the former Anambra State governor has described as disturbing, adding another layer of tension to Nigeria’s growing political atmosphere ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to a report by The Sun, Obi made the demand in a statement shared on his X account, where he expressed concern about what he described as harassment and intimidation of his supporters.
The Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate argued that Nigerians should be able to support candidates of their choice without fear. He also called for transparency regarding Olawale’s arrest, respect for his rights and an end to what he described as politically motivated harassment.
Obi maintained that his campaign would remain peaceful and focused on issues such as accountability, competence, justice and compassion. He insisted that choosing peaceful engagement should not be interpreted as weakness.
The politician also criticised President Bola Tinubu, alleging that the government’s actions were undermining democratic freedoms. These are Obi’s political allegations; the report does not establish them as proven facts.
The development comes as political parties and their supporters intensify activities ahead of the next general election. With competition expected to become more intense, disputes over political expression, supporters’ rights and the conduct of public authorities could become important campaign issues.
For many Nigerians, the central question is whether political competition can remain peaceful while allowing citizens to express their preferences freely.
Obi’s demand has now placed Olawale’s case in the public spotlight, with attention likely to focus on the circumstances of the arrest and any official response from the relevant authorities.
