FG Approves ₦70,000 Monthly Transport Allowance for Workers Starting November

The Federal Government has approved a ₦70,000 monthly transport allowance for public service workers for six months, beginning in November 2026, following discussions with organised labour.

The announcement comes as many Nigerian households continue to struggle with the cost of transportation, food and other daily essentials. For workers who spend a significant portion of their income commuting, the temporary support could provide some breathing room, although its practical impact will depend on payment arrangements and implementation.

Reports also say the government agreed to pay outstanding peculiar allowance arrears in three equal monthly instalments beginning in November. However, the discussions did not settle the question of when a new national minimum-wage implementation date would take effect. A committee is expected to continue negotiations involving government, labour and employers.

The distinction matters: the transport allowance is a temporary intervention, not an announcement that the national minimum wage itself has increased. Workers will want clear information about eligibility, payment schedules and whether the arrangement will reach the relevant public servants as promised.

Labour leaders have continued to push for measures that respond to the rising cost of living. The coming weeks will show whether the agreement translates into timely support or whether further negotiations will be needed.

For workers, the headline figure is encouraging, but implementation will ultimately determine how much difference the policy makes to their monthly budgets.
