Prominent human rights activist and politician Omoyele Sowore has launched a scathing attack on the Nigeria Police Force and the judiciary following the court-ordered remand of Nollywood actress and politician Doris Ogala at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre!
Ogala was remanded by a Federal High Court in Lagos after being arraigned on a three-count charge involving alleged cyberbullying, cyberstalking, and attempted extortion involving popular cleric Pastor Chris Okafor.
Reacting forcefully in a public statement, Sowore condemned the actress’s detention, alleging that law enforcement agencies have continued to weaponize the Cybercrimes Act to shield influential figures and criminalize private personal disputes.
“Once again, the Nigeria Police Force has deepened its weaponization of the Cybercrimes Act! What kind of society are we becoming?” Sowore questioned. “The police must stop criminalizing private disputes, and the judiciary must never become an instrument of religious influence or personal vendettas. This abuse must end!”
According to court filings, prosecution counsel told the judge that Ogala allegedly published intimate photographs and false electronic messages against the pastor without his consent. Ogala pleaded not guilty to all charges, while her defense counsel argued for bail.
Justice Akintayo Aluko ordered that she remain in custody at Kirikiri pending the hearing of her bail application.
Sowore urged the authorities to uphold constitutional rights and due process, insisting that personal conflicts should not be dragged before federal courts to silence individuals.
The heated legal drama has stirred massive reactions across social media platforms like X, Facebook, and Instagram, with legal commentators and civil rights advocates discussing the boundary between legal cybercrime prosecution and private civil matters.
