Nigeria’s preparations for the 2027 general elections have taken another dramatic turn after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) acknowledged irregular entries, including AI-generated photographs, in the preliminary voters’ register.
The revelation has raised serious questions about the integrity of the voter database, particularly as the country prepares for another major election.
INEC’s Director of ICT, Lawrence Bayode, reportedly explained that some registration officers had access to the system and introduced irregular records. The commission says it is working to correct the problems before certifying the final register.
But former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is not satisfied with simply removing questionable entries.
Atiku has demanded that INEC identify and investigate officials responsible for the irregularities. He has also called for an independent forensic audit and the preservation of relevant electronic records so that the circumstances surrounding the entries can be properly examined.
The controversy is already becoming a major political talking point, with opposition figures questioning whether Nigerians can have complete confidence in the electoral process.
INEC says the final register will be certified on December 15, 2026. Until then, the commission faces the challenge of convincing Nigerians that every eligible voter will be properly represented and that suspicious entries will not undermine the process.
With the 2027 elections approaching, this is one controversy that is unlikely to disappear quietly.
