INEC Receives 5,400 Complaints Over Voter Register Ahead of 2027 Elections

The road to Nigeria’s 2027 general elections is becoming increasingly eventful, with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) revealing that it has received more than 5,400 claims and objections concerning the preliminary voters’ register.

INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan disclosed that the commission had recorded more than 4,800 claims and approximately 600 objections as part of its efforts to clean up the database.

The figures are significant because Nigeria’s preliminary register currently contains more than 103 million registered voters.

According to the commission, many of the complaints involve corrections and discrepancies identified during the public display of the register. INEC has promised to address valid complaints before certifying the final register on December 15.

The commission is also planning a nationwide mock accreditation exercise in November to test its voter accreditation and election-result transmission systems.

For Nigerians, the biggest concern is whether the electoral body can resolve the problems before election day. With political parties already preparing for the next general elections, confidence in the voters’ register will be crucial.

INEC has an important task ahead: ensuring that eligible voters are not wrongly excluded and that questionable records do not compromise the credibility of the elections.
