The race towards Nigeria’s 2027 general elections has taken another interesting turn after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) disclosed that it had flagged 268 voter records over suspected AI-generated photographs and other irregularities.
The revelation has sparked fresh conversations about the credibility of Nigeria’s voter register and the growing influence of artificial intelligence in the electoral process.
INEC’s Director of Information and Communication Technology, Lawrence Bayode, reportedly explained that the commission’s Automated Biometric Identification System identified the questionable records for further examination.
The development comes as political parties and opposition figures continue to demand greater transparency from the electoral body.
With millions of Nigerians expected to participate in the 2027 elections, the accuracy of the voter register will be crucial. INEC will need to demonstrate that suspicious entries are properly investigated without wrongly removing eligible voters.
For many Nigerians, the bigger question is whether the commission can guarantee a credible and trustworthy register before election day.
