Rangers End Rivers United’s Home Winning Run With 1-1 Draw

The Nigeria Premier Football League title race has become even more interesting after Rivers United and defending champions Enugu Rangers played out a 1-1 draw in their Matchday 11 encounter.

Rivers United took the lead through Chijioke Mbaoma in the 18th minute, giving the home supporters hope of another important victory.

However, Rangers responded after the break, with Godwin Obaje finding the equaliser in the 54th minute.

The visitors later had to deal with a difficult situation when Obaje was sent off, leaving Rangers with 10 men. Despite the numerical disadvantage, they held on to secure a valuable point.

The result means Rivers United remain on 18 points, while Rangers are also on the same tally, although the Enugu side have played fewer matches.

The competition at the top is becoming intense, with Bendel Insurance and Kano Pillars also sitting on 18 points.

Bendel Insurance produced one of the weekend’s biggest results, coming from behind to defeat Kwara United 2-1 in Ilorin. Kayode Oke and Chinedu Nwosu scored the goals that completed the turnaround.

Elsewhere, Enyimba defeated Kun Khalifat 1-0 to secure a much-needed victory, while Shooting Stars thrashed Abia Warriors 4-1.

With several clubs closely packed near the top of the table, the NPFL title race is shaping up to be a fascinating contest.
