AC Milan’s hope of increasing their lead at the top of the Italian Serie A table by three points got cut short on Saturday as rather unprecedented 3-0 defeat to Atalanta instead reduced their lead to two points short ahead of second-place Inter Milan, who would have been on the level on points with their city rivals had they not been held to a goalless draw by Udinese.
It was Milan’s second loss of the season and a deserving one, one might say, seeing that they were outplayed by Atalanta right under their roof at the San Siro.
The visitors took the lead 26 minutes into play when Cristian Romero headed home Robin Gosens’ corner.
Milan failed to find a break into the game and paid some more for that after the break, as Ilicic made no mistakes from the spot after a penalty was awarded for a foul on him by Franck Kessie in the 52nd minute.
Still capitalizing on AC Milan’s lack of steel, Duvan Zapata sealed Atalanta’s show of dominance with the third goal in the 77 minutes of play.
The vast and deserving victory moved Atalanta to fourth on the log, seven points behind Milan.
