Manchester City took their winning streak to 11 straight wins on Tuesday with a 5-0 thrashing of West Brom, a result which moved to the top of the table, for the first time this season, displacing their city rivals, Manchester United who play Sheffield United today and could retain top spot if they win.
In form, Ilkay Gundogan gave City an early lead in the sixth minute before grabbing his second 24 minutes later to make it three for the visitors.
Twenty minutes into the game, Joao Cancelo doubled City’s lead with a seemingly controversial goal, which he scored while an offside flag was raised, and several players seemed to stop. The goal stood after the VAR review, with the referee saying the flag was wrongly raised.
Riyad Mahrez made it four just on the brink of half time.
Raheem Sterling came off the bench after the break and swiftly added his goal chat with a 57th-minute tap in off a Mahrez assist.
West Brom had suffered a 4-0 defeat to Arsenal in their last game before playing Manchester City. With the result, no team in Europe’s top five divisions has conceded as many goals at home as Sam Allardyce’s Albion, 17 in his last four home games.
The extremely underwhelming West Brom, who are 19th on the log, six points off the drop zone, will now play Fulham on Saturday with the hope of getting something out of the all important game. At the same time, Manchester City will welcome Sheffield United to the Etihad on the same day.
