The Imole Council has clarified that Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke’s recent visit to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu does not signal plans by the governor to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC. The clarification followed public speculation about Adeleke’s political future after his meeting with the President. The council said the visit should be understood as part of the governor’s engagement with the Federal Government and not as an indication that he intends to leave his current political platform. Adeleke has remained a prominent PDP figure in Osun State and has continued to participate in political activities under the party. Meetings between state governors and the President are common, particularly when discussions involve issues of national importance, development, security and cooperation between federal and state authorities. The council’s statement is therefore intended to separate political engagement from party defection. Speculation about possible defections has become common in Nigerian politics, particularly as politicians position themselves ahead of the 2027 general election. Several political figures have changed parties in recent years, making any high-profile meeting between leaders a subject of public discussion. The Imole Council urged members of the public and political observers to avoid drawing conclusions from the governor’s meeting with Tinubu without confirmation from the governor or his authorised representatives. Adeleke’s administration has also continued to focus on governance and development programmes in Osun, while maintaining its political affiliation with the PDP. The clarification could help ease concerns among supporters who feared that the governor might be considering a move to the ruling party. Adeleke’s relationship with the Federal Government is also important because Osun, like other states, depends on cooperation with federal institutions on several areas of development and public administration. Engagement with the President does not necessarily require a change in political allegiance. As the 2027 election approaches, however, political movements involving prominent governors will continue to attract close attention. For now, the Imole Council’s position is that Adeleke’s visit to Tinubu should be viewed as an official engagement and not as evidence of an impending APC defection. Any decision regarding the governor’s political affiliation would ultimately need to be announced through an authorised channel.
