AFCON Final Fallout: CAF Punishes Senegal and Morocco After Rabat Chaos

The 2025 AFCON final may be over, but the fallout is just beginning. Following a chaotic night in Rabat, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially dropped the hammer on both Senegal and Morocco.

From locker room brawls to “towel-gate,” here is the breakdown of the sanctions rocking African football.

CAF’s Disciplinary Board didn’t hold back, targeting the biggest names on the pitch and the sidelines:

  • Achraf Hakimi (Morocco): The PSG star receives a two-match ban for unsporting behavior following a heated post-match confrontation.
  • Malick Thiaw (Senegal): The defensive pillar has been hit with a three-match suspension for his involvement in the tunnel scuffle.
  • Pape Thiaw (Senegal Coach): Despite the win, the coach faces a five-match ban and a $100,000 fine for leading a temporary player walk-off during the match.

The federations are paying a steep price for the lack of crowd and player control:

FederationFine AmountReason
Senegal (FSF)$600,000Player walk-off & pitch invasions
Morocco (FRMF)$450,000Fan misconduct & laser use

While Morocco’s formal protest to replay the match was rejected, these sanctions leave both teams severely depleted heading into the next international window. Senegal remains the champion, but the victory now carries a very expensive “disrepute” tag.
