Legal practitioner and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Adebayo Amupitan, has stated that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) cannot achieve full institutional independence without complete financial autonomy, stressing that adequate funding safeguards are essential to strengthening Nigeria’s electoral system ahead of the 2027 general elections. Speaking on the future of electoral reforms, Amupitan argued that an election management body must have the freedom to plan, budget, and execute its constitutional responsibilities without undue financial constraints or external influence. According to him, granting INEC greater control over its finances would enhance public confidence, improve operational efficiency, and reinforce the credibility of the electoral process. He noted that financial independence is a key component of institutional autonomy and would enable the commission to carry out voter registration, election logistics, staff training, technology deployment, and other critical functions more effectively.
