Mikel Arteta’s struggling Arsenal reigned superior against Chelsea as they ended their seven-game winless run in the Premier League with a 3-1 victory over their city rivals in Saturday’s London Derby.
First-half goals from Alexandre Lacazette who made no mistakes from the spot in the 34th minute and Granit Xhaka who sent in a sheer screamer of a free-kick 10 minutes later put Arteta’s rather young side in front.
After the break, Bukayo Saka’s scored a rather unexpected, yet beautiful goal to take the tally to 3.
In the 85th minute, Tammy Abraham pulled one back for the gunners, and with heading into stoppage time, Lampard’s side who have been pretty unimpressive all night started to pick up some tempo and their efforts got them a penalty which was taken by Jorginho and saved by Bernd Leno as the resurgent Gunners held on for a much needed three points.
Their first victory since November 1st and a very well-deserved one for Arsenal, who moved to 14th, giving their Manager and players, alike hope that greater things will follow Saturday’s showpiece.
The result means Frank Lampard’s side, who have now lost their last three away games and missed the chance to go second.
However, Everton took the chance to move to second following their lone goal victory against Sheffield United later on Saturday, displacing Leicester City who held 4th place Manchester United to a frustrating draw earlier on Saturday.
