Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has launched a scathing attack on President Bola Tinubu, accusing his administration of actively undermining Nigeria’s democratic foundations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Atiku’s fierce critique follows a recent Federal High Court ruling that vacated its December 10, 2025, judgment. That initial judgment had compelled the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to officially register the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as a political party. The reversal effectively halts the NDC’s bid for official recognition.
‘A Pretend Democrat’
In a strongly worded statement released on Saturday, Atiku argued that the sudden legal reversal is a reflection of the presidency’s discomfort with open political competition. He asserted that the development exposes a stark contrast between President Tinubu’s public rhetoric and his administration’s behind-the-scenes actions.
“Nigerians are now seeing the true colours of President Tinubu, who pretends to be a democrat, but his body language and the sinister activities of his agents contradict his mouthed commitment to free and fair elections,” Atiku stated.
Democratic Competition Under Threat
The opposition leader further alleged that the moves to block the registration of new political entities like the NDC are part of a broader, coordinated strategy to stifle the opposition and narrow the political playing field before the next election cycle.
According to Atiku, a healthy democracy thrives on choice and robust competition, both of which he claims are currently under siege by the ruling administration.
The Road to 2027
The controversy arrives at a time of heightened political maneuvering, as opposition figures attempt to consolidate alliances to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
As of the time of reporting, the presidency and INEC have yet to issue an official response to Atiku’s allegations. However, the court’s decision is expected to spark further legal battles and intensify the debate surrounding political party registration and electoral integrity in Nigeria.
