The political landscape in Nigeria is heating up once again, and this time, a fiery coalition of legal practitioners has stepped directly into the ring. Under the aegis of Imo Lawyers for the Defence of Democracy, the group has issued a stern, no-nonsense warning to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, demanding an immediate halt to what they termed persistent and unwarranted personal attacks against Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma. The brewing tension reportedly kicked off following political disagreements surrounding the proposed “Rainbow Coalition” ahead of the 2027 general elections, after the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governors’ Forum—chaired by Uzodinma—rejected the political alliance. Rather than channeling his grievances back to the collective forum, the legal group pointed out that the outspoken FCT minister has singled out Governor Uzodinma for direct, personal criticism.
The lawyers argued that while political differences and robust debates are completely normal in a democracy, dragging policy disagreements into the mud of personal hostility is entirely unacceptable. Delivering a blunt message, the group reminded the minister that Imo State has its own constitutionally elected leadership and should not be turned into a personal battleground for external political supremacy. They further appealed to President Bola Tinubu to encourage political restraint among key actors as the country gradually shifts its focus toward the next electoral cycle. As political alignments continue to twist and turn, one thing is certain: the people of Imo and their legal defenders are drawing a hard line in the sand, insisting that respect, rule of law, and institutional decorum must take precedence over high-stakes political mudslinging.
