The New Democratic Congress, NDC, governorship candidate in Benue State has said the state has enough human and natural resources to become economically prosperous and should not remain poor. The candidate made the statement while outlining concerns about the state’s development and the need for stronger leadership focused on improving the living conditions of residents. According to the candidate, Benue has significant potential in agriculture, natural resources, tourism and human capital, but these opportunities have not been fully developed to drive sustainable economic growth. The governorship hopeful argued that effective management of the state’s resources could create jobs, increase internally generated revenue and improve infrastructure across communities. The candidate also stressed the importance of investing in agriculture, describing it as one of Benue’s strongest economic advantages because of the state’s fertile land and large farming population. Other areas identified as important to development include education, healthcare, roads, industrialisation and support for small businesses. The NDC candidate said government should create an environment where young people can acquire relevant skills and access opportunities to build sustainable livelihoods. The comments come as political activities continue to increase ahead of the 2027 elections, with political parties and candidates presenting their plans to voters. The candidate called for a development strategy that would move Benue away from dependence on federal allocations and encourage greater economic productivity within the state. The NDC campaign is expected to focus on economic empowerment, improved public services and responsible management of government resources. The candidate urged residents to demand accountability and support leaders capable of transforming the state’s economic potential into tangible development.
