LP Name Osuntokun as DG of its Presidential Campaign Council

Akin Osuntokun, a former presidential adviser, has been appointed by the Labour Party as the new Director-General (DG) of its Presidential Campaign Council (PCC).

Osuntokun replaces Doyin Okupe who resigned as the director-general of the campaign council for the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

On December 19, 2022, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of a Federal High Court in Abuja declared Okupe guilty of violating the Money Laundering Act by accepting more than N200 million in cash from former National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki.

Okupe was given a two-year prison sentence with the possibility of a fine after the court found him guilty of counts 34, 35, 36, and 59.

Before the two joined the LP this year, Okupe was an associate of Obi from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Okupe later paid an N13m fine and avoided going to jail.

At a strategic meeting with Labour Party candidates, PCC members, and other stakeholders on Tuesday in Abuja, the party’s national chairman, Barrister Julius Abure, announced the appointment and said that Okupe’s resignation made the appointment essential.

He claimed that despite missing Dr. Okupe’s abundance of knowledge, the party was forced to accept his resignation due to a number of factors.

Osuntokun was the campaign council’s Zonal Coordinator for the South until recently. Formerly serving as the managing director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Osuntokun also directed the People’s Democratic Party’s presidential campaign in 2011 and advised former president Olusegun Obasanjo on political matters.
