AFCON hosts Cameroon kick off tournament with victory over Burkina Faso

Cameroon got off to a good start in the opening game of the 2021 African Cup of Nations with a comeback win over Burkina Faso 2-1 in the opening game of the 2021 AFCON on Sunday.

After an elaborate opening ceremony by the host, Burkina Faso took a surprise lead in the 24th minute through Gustavo Sangare’s volley.

However, two well-converted penalties from Cameroon’s skipper, Vincent Aboubakar, in the first half, saw the hosts find their way back into the game.

Though a third goal for Cameroon and Aboubakar got ruled out after a three-minute VAR review, the converted spot-kicks were enough to earn The Indomitable Lions their second ever win against Burkina Faso at the AFCON.
The hosts’ next game comes up on Wednesday against Ethiopia while Burkina Faso will hope to bounce back when they face Cape Verde on the same day.
