Bayern Players Clear Out UEFA Awards

Polish Forward, Robert Lewandowski was named UEFA men’s player of the year on Thursday ahead of teammate, Manuel Neuer and Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, following a phenomenal season in which he won the treble with Bayern Munich.

The striker scored 55 goals in 47 games as Bayern also won the Bundesliga and German Cup.

Lewandowski PSG duo of MbappΓ© and Neymar to picked up the award for best forward in last season’s Champions League after amassing 15 goals in 10 games. In one match against Red Star Belgrade he needed just 14 minutes to score four times.

The 32-year-old was also top scorer in the Bundesliga last season with 34 goals, equal to a goal a game in the 18-team league.

It was the fifth time he claimed the β€˜cannon’ award for the highest number of goals in the German top flight since arriving at Bayern from Borussia Dortmund in 2014.

Lewandowski would have been the strong favourite to win this year’s Ballon d’Or had it not been cancelled by France Football magazine due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Despite missing on the player if the year award to his teammate, Bayern captain, Manuel Neuer beat PSG’ Keylor Baba’s and AtlΓ©tico’s Oblak to win the goalkeeper of the year award, while youngster, Joshua Kimmich edged past teammates, Davies Alphonso and Alaba to take him the defender of the year award.  

Of course, the coach who guided Bayern Munich to their second treble in the club’s history was not left out. 

Bayern’s coach, Hansi Flick always went home with the UEFA Men’s Coach of the Year award to ensure the Bavarians cleared out 6 well deserved accolades. 

There was an odd one out, though. Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne Bayern Munich’s Thomas MΓΌller and former Bayern midfielder Thiago AlcΓ’ntara who just joined Liverpool to clinic the UEFA Men’s Midfielder of the Season award.
