Benzema bid farewell to Real Madrid with a goal
Karim Benzema made his final appearance as a Real Madrid player count, as he converted a spot kick in the second half to hand Madrid a draw against Athletic Bilbao in the final game of the season.
Oihan Sancet had given the visitors the lead in the 49th minute, before Benzema made no mistakes from the spot to level things in the 72nd minute, bagging his 354th goal for Real Madrid.
Madrid had earlier on Sunday announced that the Frenchman was leaving the club after 14 years, in which he won 25 trophies including five Champions Leagues, four La Liga titles, and a Balon d’OR award.
The 35-year-old who leaves Madrid as the club’s second-highest all-time record goal scorer, was met with a standing ovation when he was replaced by Luka Modric in the 74th minute. It was a befitting end to the man who stayed long enough to see himself become a legend in one of the biggest, most decorated clubs in the world.
Real Madrid finished the season second on the log, with 78 points, 10 behind champions, Barcelona and one point ahead of City rivals, Atletico Madrid who finished third with 77 points.
