EPL: Everton defeats Chelsea to keep survival hopes alive
Everton is now two points of the Premier League safety zone with a surprise yet important 1-0 win over Chelsea at Goodison Park.
Heading into the game in the relegation zone, five points behind Leeds and Burnley, the hosts knew they needed to get all three points as they continue to fight to extend a 68-year stay in the top flight.
They’re all-out display paid off a minute after the break when Richarlison chipped in his ninth goal of the season.
Everton could have doubled the lead but for Vitalii Mykolenko’s miss and Chelsea could have maneuvered their way back into the game but for some goal-keeping heroics from Jordan Pickford.
The result handed Frank Lampard his fourth win in 13 Premier League games in charge and reduced the gap behind Leeds and Burnley, with the Toffees having a game in hand on their relegation rivals.
Meanwhile, Chelsea has been thrown back into the top four race with their chances of finishing third now in danger, as a hard-earned victory for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal over Westham saw them move to three points behind Thomas Tuchel’s side.
