EPL: Liverpool Humbled in Stunning 7-2 Whitewash by Aston Villa

The Premier League Champions who were unbeaten till their 28th league game leading to their title triumph last season had their fine start to their title defence truncated by a highly unprecedented 7-2 trashing in the hands of Aston Villa.

The Reds who were without injured goalkeeper Alisson Becker and with Thiago Alcantara and Sadio Mane unavailable due to coronavirus infections saw Villa take the lead after just four minutes as Adrian’s poor pass was seized upon by Grealish, who squared Ollie Watkins’s to score his first Premier League goal and what would be his first of the three goals he went on to score last night.

After Watkins’s second goal, Mohamed Salah seemed to have got the visitors back in the game when he slammed home on his trusty left-foot after Mane’s understudy, Diogo Jota, tried to burrow a way into the penalty area.

But Villa quickly restored their two-goal cushion when John McGinn’s effort from the edge of the area deflected in off Virgil van Dijk.

Six minutes before the break Trezeguet set Watkins up for his third and Villa’s fourth goal of the night, making him the first player in a decade to score a hat-trick against Liverpool.

After the break, Ross Barkley scored a debut goal to give the host a 5-1 advantage.

Salah remained razor sharp in front of goal as he smashed in a brilliant finish from Roberto Firmino’s pass to bring the deficit to 5-2

But, Villa were not done as two more goals from the Villa captain ensured that Liverpool conceded seven goals in a game for the first time since 1963.
