Euro 2020: Germany thrash Portugal in comeback victory

Germany came from behind to trump Portugal 4-2 in their thrilling Group F encounter in the ongoing Euro 2020 championship.

Cristiano Ronaldo had put the defending champions ahead 15 minutes into the game, continuing his record-breaking campaign with his third goal of the tournament, his 12th European Championship strike of all time and his 107th international goal.

But two own goals from Ruben Dias and then Raphael Guerreiro in the space of five minutes turned things around in favour of Germany’s favour heading into the break.

After the break, Atalanta wing-back Robin Gosens set Chelsea forward Kai Havertz for the third before heading in Germany’s fourth himself. Though Diogo Jota pulled one back for Portugal, they weren’t enough to stop Germany from completing not just a comeback but a perfect bounce back after losing their opening game of the campaign to France.

The result means both these sides now sit on three points, one behind group leaders France, heading into a vital final round of fixtures on Wednesday.

Germany host Hungary, who earlier on Saturday held France to a draw, while Portugal faces the world champions in the final game with all four nations still able to progress.
