Euro 2020: Italy ease past Turkey in Euro 2020 opener

The long-awaited Euro 2020 (rescheduled from last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic) kicked off on Friday in grand style, with Italy putting out an impressive display as they picked up a comfortable 3-0 victory over Turkey in their opening Group A game, right in front of their supporters.

Though the game was essentially one-sided right from the onset, the goals didn’t come in till after the break when Turkey’s Merih Demiral broke the deadlock with an own goal in the 53rd minute.

Italy capitalized on the break, and soon after, Ciro Immobile made it two for the Azzurri’s, before Lorenzo Insigne sealed things off in the 79th minute with a sleek finish to ensure the first of 51 fixtures to be played in 11 European cities over the next month ended in favour of the best team of the night and possibly one of the tournament’s favourites.

Both teams are back in action on Wednesday, with Turkey taking om Wales in Baku and Italy entertaining Switzerland in Rome.
