Euro 2020: Italy left it extra late against Austria to book quarter-finals spot

Austria gave Italy a good run for their money as they dragged Roberto Mancini’s men into extra time in a keenly contested round of 16 fixture at Wembley.

Austria, who were making their first appearance in the knockout stage of the European Championship, had Marko Arnautovic’s header disallowed after a VAR check for offside in standard time.

The game remained goalless at the end of regulation time and got into extra time where goals from substitutes Federico Chiesa and Matteo Pessina saved Italy some blushes.

A resolute Austria pulled a goal back through Sasa Kalajdzic’s header to ensure Italy conceded for the first time in 12 games. Still, the Azzurri’s 31st match without defeat – a new national record, remains intact.

Italy will now square up in the quarter-finals against the winner of the 16 clashes between defending Champions Portugal and one of the tournament’s favourites, Belgium.
