Euro 2020: Netherlands secure hard-earned win in 5 goal thriller against Ukraine

Thanks to Denzel Dumfries late header, the Netherlands opened their Euro 2020 campaign with a hard-fought victory in an entertaining Group C game against Ukraine.

After playing out a frustrating goalless first half, the Oranje finally broke the deadlock with two quickfire goals from Captain Georginio Wijnaldum and Wout Weghorst.

The host looked set on securing a comfortable win when Ukraine pulled one back through Andriy Yarmolenko’s 25-yard screamer and level things up four minutes later, courtesy of Roman Yaremchuk header, changing the dynamics of the game and leaving the home fans apprehensive.

As the saying goes, it’s not over until it is. The Dutch kept going forward despite threats from the visitors. Their efforts paid off in the 85th minute when Dumfries picked up substitute Nathan Ake’s cross to ensure a much needed and we’ll deserve the win for Holland on their return to the major tournament after a long seven-year absence.

Both teams are back in action on Thursday, with Ukraine up against North Macedonia in Bucharest. The Netherlands will be rooting for a more “comfortable” victory when they play host to Austria in Amsterdam.
