Europa: United miss top spot despite narrow win against Real Sociedad

Manchester United’s lone goal was enough to end Real Sociedad’s perfect run in the Europa League, but failed to move them to the top of Group E.

Teenager, Alejandro Garnacho’s 17 minutes goal was the difference, however it wasn’t enough as Ten Hag’s side needed to win the game by two goals or more to finish ahead of Real Sociedad.

With the result, United finished levelled on 15 points with Real Sociedad, but the Spanish side progressed to the round of 16 with a higher goal difference.

The Red Devils will now play in next year’s two legged knockout round plays against teams dropping from the champions league, to book a place in the Europa League’s last 16.

Mondays draw will determine if United will face Ten Hag’s former team, Ajax, Barcelona, Ronaldo’s former side, Juventus,

Ukraine’s Shakhtar Donetsk, Bayer Leverkusen, Sporting Lisbon, Red Bull Salzburg or Sevilla
