FIFA World Cup: Host Nation suffer historic opening game defeat

After a four year wait, the biggest tournament in world football is here; The FIFA 2022 Qatar World Cup.

This world cup has rolled out a lot of firsts, from being the most expensive world cup in history, to being the first winter world cup, the first mid season world cup and the first Arab Nation World Cup.

After treating football lovers around the world to a very powerful and colourful opening ceremony with glitz and glamour, the Gulf nation wasn’t ready for what followed.

Qataris had to painstakingly watch as their national team suffered a 2-0 defeat to Ecuador, become the first host country to lose a World Cup opening in 92 years.

Felix Sanchez’s first half double was enough to do the damage and set the tournament rolling.

Qatar, who are participating in the world cup for the first time are in Group A along with Ecuador (who have already made their mark), Senegal, (who are without their injured star man, Sadio Mane), and The Netherlands.

The host nation will most likely go back to the drawing board to prevent further humiliation. And while they are at it, in Group B, England, Iran, USA and Wales are all set to trade tackles today.
