France crush Ukraine 7-1 in ‘friendly’ game

The game between France and Ukraine was billed as an international ‘friendly’ but with a 7-1 scoreline in favour of the host, it’s very safe to say France did not get the ‘friendly’ memo!

Olivier Giroud didn’t just captain the French side to victory last night, he scored twice to become France’s second top scorer on his 100th national appearance for the world cup winners to move within nine goals of Thierry Henry’s French scoring record.

Camavinga put France ahead on nine minutes with a clever overhead kick after Giroud’s header had been parried by Heorhiy Bushchan.

Giroud, 34, doubled France’s tally with a splendid 20-metre screamer into the top corner in the 24th minute and he added the third nine minutes later with a header before.

Vitaliy Mykolenko headed a Houssem Aouar cross into his own net six minutes before the break to make it four for Deschamps side.

Corentin Tolisso, and second substitutes Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann all found the back of the net and while Viktor Tsygankov pulled back one to reduce the deficit to 7-1 for the injury and COVID-19-ravaged Ukraine in a near-empty Stade de France.

Ukraine coach Andriy Shevchenko had to improvise with six injuries and eight COVID-19 cases in his expected squad

France faces Portugal next in a Nations League Group 3 clash on Sunday as Ukraine take on Germany in a Group 4 game.
