GoFundMe shuts down Amber Heard’s Fundraiser to pay Johnny Depp’s Damages

GoFundMe has shut down a fake $1 million fundraiser claiming to help Amber Heard pay damages to Johnny Depp.

The GoFundMe page went live after the bombshell trial between Heard and Depp ended this week with the Pirates of the Caribbean star’s victory.

This past week, a jury ruled in favor of Depp, believing that the actor proved elements of defamation and that Heard “acted with actual malice.” His total damages equal about $10.35 million, and Heard was awarded $2 million in damages on one count. 

Heard’s lawyer, Elaine Bredehoft, told the Today show Thursday that she will appeal the verdict, as Heard can “absolutely not” pay the damages.

After the verdict, a fundraiser was started by a woman named Kimberly Moore who claimed she was in touch with the actress’ legal team, had a goal of $1 million.

The page’s description read, “I believe Amber, and social media protected the abuser. The judgment exceeds her net worth. It’s so sad that he was able to get away with the abuse. The judgment furthers that abuse. If you can please help her.”

But a rep for GoFundMe says they were able to flag the profile quickly before much money was donated after determining that Amber’s team hadn’t created the page. It was then shut down.

In a statement to BuzzFeed News, a GoFundMe spokesperson said, “Our top priority is to keep our community safe and protect the generosity of our donors. GoFundMe will remove any fundraisers unless there’s a direct connection and the fundraiser has been authorized by the recipient of the funds.”
