Jonathan has not Resigned Membership of Party-PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said former President Goodluck Jonathan has not resigned as a party member.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Debo Ologunagba, stated this during his appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily.

According to him, “As far as today, I am not aware of his resignation from the membership of the party [PDP]”, he said on Friday amid speculations that the former Nigerian leader is joining the All Progressives Congress (APC) to vie for the presidential seat in next year’s poll.

“I would assume it is safe to say that he is a party member,” the PDP spokesman maintained. “If events follow after that, we can speak to that.”

Ologunagba stressed that the party would not respond to rumours of Jonathan’s defection with no proven fact.

He stated further that questions about Jonathan’s defection should be channelled to him and his ward in Bayelsa State.

“Membership of the party is personal. Membership of the party is at the ward level,” he added.

“I can’t speak for him. I don’t speak for the former President,” the PDP chieftain stressed.

Recall that there have been rumours making rounds that the former president has joined the ruling All Progressive Party following the purchase of the Presidential expression of interest and nomination form for him by a group of Fulani and Almajiri.

Jonathan’s aide Ikechukwu Eze had debunked acceptance of the form which Empire had earlier reported. He said his principal did not approve the purchase of the forms.

“We want to state that if the former President wanted to contest an election, he would make his intentions clear to the public and will not enter through the back door,” the statement read.

“While we appreciate the overwhelming request by a cross-section of Nigerians for Dr Jonathan to make himself available for the 2023 Presidential election, we wish to state that he has not in any way committed himself to this request,” Eze said.

“Buying a presidential aspiration form in the name Dr Jonathan without his consent, knowing the position he had held in this country, is considered an insult to his person. The general public is therefore advised to disregard it.”

However, there were rumours that the former president had accepted to join the race on the platform of the ruling party, having received the form.
