Lazio vs Cagliari: The Eagles Fly Right Back Into The Champions League

Serie A side, Lazio were over the top on Thursday night as a dramatic comeback against Cagliari did not just put an end to a 5 game win less streak, but also ensured they secured a Champions League spot after enduring a 13-year absence from the competition.

Cagliari took the game to Lazio right off the start and had an early goal from a free kick by forward Joao Pedro which was signaled as indirect get disallowed by the referee, but the visitors did not let that deter them as they continued to hold down the host and soon enough they found the back of the net when Giovanni Simeone broke the deadlock at the halftime mark.

The White and Sky Blue leveled after the break when Milinkovic-Savic sent home a volley and try as the Islanders did, they couldn’t stop Ciro Immobile from taking his goal tally to 31, one above former joint leading goal scorer, Cristinao Ronaldo who failed to find the back of the night in a rather frustrating outing on the same night.

Immobile’s goal sealed it for Lazio, handing them the final champions league slot in the Italian league and turning their over a decade dreams of being back in the elite game of champions into a reality.

Speaking after the game, an excited Immobile said,

I’m happy, it’s right to celebrate reaching an important target for us which we achieved three matches in advance,” said Immobile.

“We are proud despite the difficulties we have faced after lockdown. This is something that Lazio haven’t achieved for years.”

Siting 4th on the table with 72 points and three games left to play, Lazio who lost their position at the top of the table to current leaders, Juventus following their poor run in form since project restart, can still fancy having a mathematical chance of overhauling Juve who have 80 points after losing to Udinese.

The possibility of such a football happenstance may seem low, but this is Lazio and it won’t hurt for them to dream, will it?
