Obaseki’s Victory, Triumph of Justice- PDP

The Weekend was a good one for the Peoples Democratic Party, as the certificate forgery case against Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki was ruled by the Federal High court.

The PDP had described the court ruling as a victory for democracy and the triumph of justice.
This was contained in a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, in Abuja, entitled, “Edo Election: PDP Hails High Court Verdict on Obaseki…Says It is Triumph of Justice”.

The statement read in part, “The party describes the verdict of the court as the triumph of justice, victory for democracy and a seal on Governor Obaseki’s landslide victory as the clear choice of the people at the September 19, 2020 governorship election.

“Indeed, the instant jubilation on the streets of Edo State at the news of the judgment is a resounding testimony that justice was being upheld and that Governor Obaseki’s election was in line with the wishes and aspiration of the overwhelming majority of the people of Edo state.

“Unarguably, Governor Obaseki was reelected because he manifested patriotism and dedication to duty as demonstrated in his unwavering zeal towards the development of his state and the empowerment of his people.”

Ologbondiyan applauded the judiciary for upholding justice on the case. He said the party puts the will of the people at heart and therefore urged Obaseki to continue to deliver his promises to the people.

The APC had accused Governor Godwin Obaseki of certificate forgery. The plaintiffs accused the Governor of forging his Bachelor of Art in Classical Studies certificate, which he submitted to INEC to support his nomination as the candidate of PDP in the September 2020 Edo State governorship election.

While delivering judgment, Justice Ahmed Mohammed held that the plaintiffs did not prove their claim that the certificate submitted by Obaseki to the Independent National Electoral Commission before the September 19, 2019 governorship election in the state was forged.

He noted that the plaintiffs relied on the photocopied document presented by Governor Obaseki without getting in touch with the university to verify the authenticity of the said certificate.

On his part, obaseki, while reacting to the ruling, said the verdict delivered by Justice Mohammed was well-received as a victory for the rule of law. He added that the judgment confirmed, once again, that the Edo people were well-guided in trusting him to lead them in the September 2020 governorship election.

The Governor further pledged to continue to bring development to the people, irrespective of all odds.
