South African rapper AKA shot dead in Durban

South African rapper Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes was shot dead on Florida Road Friday night, police sources confirm.

Another person believed to be AKA’s bodyguard was also wounded, while another unidentified person, who is understood to be a close friend of AKA, was also shot dead.

It is understood that AKA was standing outside the Wish Restaurant when he was gunned down in a drive-by shooting.

Two unknown cars are believed to have opened fire just before 10 pm.

Police had cordoned off the area when an IOL team arrived at the scene on Friday night.

Speaking to TimesLIVE, ALS paramedic Garrith Jamieson explained that just after 10.15 pm this evening they responded to a shooting incident where two men sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

“On arrival, paramedics met total chaos and a scene where two men, believed to be in their late 30s,  sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics assisted the men and unfortunately the first male had sustained multiple gun shot wounds and showed no signs of life and was declared deceased at the scene.”

He said a second male was found in critical condition and died despite advanced life support intervention due to extensive injuries.

It remains unclear what the motive for the shooting was. SAPS and Metro were on the scene and closed the road to assist with the investigation.

According to social media posts, AKA was due to perform at the YUGO nightclub in Stamford Hill that evening as part of his birthday celebrations.

AKA was born and raised in Cape Town and rose to prominence with the release of his single “Victory Lap,” which was featured on his debut album Altar Ego in 2011.

He gained a following in Nigeria as well, thanks to his hit single “Fela in Versace.”

He shared a daughter, Kairo, with DJ Zinhle and was in a relationship with rapper Nadia Nakai.

May his soul rest in peace.
