Tinubu, Obi Congratulates UK’s New Prime Minister
In light of the success of the Labour Party in the UK general election, President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Keir Starmer, the leader of the party.
The President stated this in a statement by his Special Adviser, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, on Friday in Abuja. He noted that Tinubu noted the determination and courage the incoming Prime Minister of the United Kingdom demonstrated throughout his years in the opposition and as the leader of the Labour Party.
The president claimed that Starmer’s leadership abilities were validated by the party’s capacity to mobilise, reform, and set itself up for triumph after 14 years.
In addition, President Tinubu praised the people and government of the United Kingdom, calling it a steadfast ally of Nigeria and an example of democracy.
The president went on to say that he was looking forward to strengthening democratic institutions, expanding mutual areas of interest between Nigeria and the UK, and creating a more secure and prosperous future for the citizens of both nations.
In a related development, Peter Obi, a former Labour Party presidential contender in 2023, has congratulated Starmer on his victory and urged him to support the advancement of Nigerian democracy.
Obi added that Starmer’s victory would improve the situation of those living in the UK. Taking to his X handle on Friday, Obi tweeted, “I sincerely congratulate @Keir_Starmer, and the Labour Party UK on the landslide victory they recorded in Thursday’s election. May the victory translate to a better and new chapter for all the UK residents as you remain committed to your electoral promises.
“I also hope that your government will promote stronger ties between the UK and Nigeria, and help in deepening our own democracy, especially during the challenging times that our nation is going through.”
“Nigeria is grappling with issues such as insecurity, education, healthcare, and poverty, and could greatly benefit from the support of the UK. Let us work together to build a brighter future commonwealth for all. I wish you a successful tenure.”
After a 14-year tenure as the right-wing Conservative prime minister, Starmer took over as Britain’s new leader on Friday.
