Tiwa Savage reveals ‘Water and Garri’ movie was inspired while she was drunk

Nigerian singer-turned-actress, Tiwa Savage has revealed the inspiration behind her new movie titled ‘Water and Garri’.

The movie “Water & Garri,” inspired by Tiwa Savage’s 2021 EP featured the singer in the lead role as Aisha, a thriving fashion designer, supported by actors such as Mike Afolarin and others.

However, following the movie’s release, some reviews have been below average, particularly from critics like Daniel Regha who described the movie as a 1.5/10.

Tiwa Savage revealed during a speech that the movie was an inspiration she had while she was drunk and alone, stirring mixed reactions from movie critics.

“This has been a labour of love for over two years. Like I have said before, this was an idea I had while I was drunk in my room and when I brought this idea to my amazing team and they said this was just a brilliant idea,” she said.

Netizens React:

Meanwhile it is important to note that the movie ‘Water and Garri’ was partly paid for by the government.

I’m not going to give specifics but we’re supporting financially in organising the premiere, not the film. Please understand that,” the Special Assistant to the President (OVP) on Digital and Creative Economy, Fegho-x Umunubo confirmed.

Prior to the press conference, Savage had thanked the office of the vice president for generously collaborating with her for the Lagos premiere.

Special shout out to the Office of The Vice President (OVP) who has generously collaborated with us for the Lagos premiere of Water & Garri. Gratitude also overflows to the esteemed office of the SA to the President (OVP) on Digital and Creative Economy @feghox and the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, and Creative Economy, under the leadership of @honhannatumusawa,” her post on Instagram read.

The premiere in Lagos drew the attendance of big names from Nollywood to Nigerian music and media. Already, Savage, who also starred in the movie said that she is working on her next film.
