Diego Simeone’s side suffered a shocking and embarrassing UEFA Champions quarter-finals defeat in the hands of German side, RP Leipzig.
The Spanish side had knocked defending Champions, Liverpool out of the competition in the round of 16 and with a good champions league experience to their name, against a club that was formed in 2009, Atletico were, as expected tipped to be the favourites in last night’s fixture.
Contrary to high expectations, Atletico failed to put up a commanding performance at the start of the game and after a rather slow and disappointing goalless first half, it was Leipzig who broke the deadlock with a header from Dani Olmo Dani in the second half.
Atletico trailed behind the Germans for most part of the game till Portuguese talent, Joao Felix brought the Spanish side to levelled terms after converting a spot kick he won following a clumsy challenge from Lukas Klostermann in the 18yard box, giving his team some hope.
Whatever hope Atletico had following Felix’s spot kick was written off when American youngster, Tyler Adams’ spottage time shot took a deflection and landed in the back of Oblak’s net, gifting the 11 year old club a 2-1 victory and a Semi-finals place in their debut UCL season
21 year old French centerback, Dayot Upamecano who was extremely essential in his teams unforseen historical triumph got rewarded the man of match award for the immense role in played..
RBLeipzig are the first German side outside of Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League since Schalke in 2010-11 and their 33 year old manager, Julian Nagelsmann, Youngest ever Bundesliga manager and the youngest manager in the UCL history to reach the UCL Semi-finals will now lead his spirited side to a Semi-finals face off gainst Paris Saint-Germain for a spot in the competition’s final.
The question is, do they stand a chance against the French Champions?
