Wizkid Breaks record as he Overtakes Fela’s Record On Billboard World Albums Chart

Nigerian singer, songwriter and performer Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid, has broken a record set by legendary Afrobeat musician Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

Fela, the legendary Nigerian musician and activist who created the ‘Afrobeat’ genre, had a run with his ‘The Best Of The Black President’ album, a compilation album released in 1999, spending a staggering forty-five weeks on the Billboard World Albums Chart, making it the album that spent the most weeks on the chart.

However, in recent updates, the new generation’s Afrobeat popstar, Wizkid has broken that record as his ‘Made in Lagos’ album, released in 2020 has also spent a total of forty-six weeks on the Billboard World Albums charts.

Comparing both records is also the fact that Wizkid’s ‘Made in Lagos’ album peaked at number one on the chart while Fela’s ‘The Best Of The Black President ‘ peaked at number three on the chart.

Released as a posthumous album in 1999, The Best Best of Fela Kuti is a 2-CD compilation album released by MCA Records. It was issued in the United States in 2000 as part of a reissue series of Kuti’s albums. On the other hand, ‘Made In Lagos’ was released in 2020 by RCA Records.

In a previous twitter post, Wizkid made it clear that his aim is not to make music like Fela, despite the semblance in the musical talent.

“Fela made songs before I was born about the issues of bad leadership and governance and even to this present administration!! my brudda nothing has changed. We gats do more”, Wizkid pointed.
