World Cup Qualifiers: England secures late win against Poland

England maintained their picture-perfect performance at the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers with a win against Poland at Wembley on Wednesday.

The game was billed to be a cracker until the Poles lost their hitman, Robert Lewandowski, to injury a few days before the encounter; despite the perceived disadvantage, the Polish side held their own and did present a stiff test for Gareth Southgate’s side.

The Three Lions took the lead in the first half when Harry Kane scored his 34th international goal from the penalty spot in the 19th minute, following Michal Helik’s challenge on Raheem Sterling.

After the break, Poland equalized when Jakub Moder made good of an error by Manchester City’s John Stones.

The game looked like it was going to end in a stalemate, but Stones made amends for his error by providing the to for Harry Maguire’s 85th winner to keep England at the top of Group I with nine maximum points.
