Bode Condemns Defections

The game of switching parties by some politicians has been condemned by a chieftain of the Prominent People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Chief Bode George.

Bode gave the condemnation Tuesday during his appearance on Arise News, stating that the action betrays the platform that gave them political relevance. His comment follows reports that some PDP governors are decamping to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to support President Bola Tinubu’s second-term bid.

The Governors reported to have declared their intentions and some weighing their options include: Governor of Akwa Ibom state, Umo Eno, Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, Enugu state Governor, Peter Mbah, and the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Sim Fubara.

He said, “We are running a system here that is very despicable, very disheartening,” he said. “A platform that gave you all the necessary tools, the opportunity to represent your constituency—now, halfway into your tenure, you’re jumping ship? I’m very disappointed with these governors. Very disappointed.”

Taking a clue from South Africa, the PDP chieftain said parties—not individuals—contest elections, which gives true meaning to party supremacy. “That is why, there, when you say the party is supreme, the party is supreme.”

He blasted and questioned the integrity of governors who campaigned under the vision and programmes of the PDP and are now turning their backs on them.

“The electorate in their states supported them because of the programmes of the party. Now you want to go back? What is it that they [the APC] have presented?” he stated.

The exodus movement of leaving the party that brought one to power seems to have become normal in recent time, as 2027 draws near more defections are falling in with many throwing their weight in support for the second term for President Bola Tinubu in order to secure their state, constituency for him.
