The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has clarified the legal tender status of the ₦100 banknote, reassuring Nigerians that the denomination remains valid for transactions and should continue to be accepted for payments across the country in accordance with existing currency regulations. The apex bank issued the clarification to address public concerns and misinformation circulating in some quarters regarding the status of the note, emphasizing that there has been no official directive withdrawing the ₦100 banknote from circulation. The CBN urged individuals, businesses, financial institutions, and merchants to continue accepting the note for all legitimate transactions, warning against the rejection of valid legal tender without lawful justification. The bank reiterated its commitment to maintaining public confidence in Nigeria’s currency while ensuring the smooth circulation of banknotes across the financial system. It also encouraged members of the public to rely only on official communications from the CBN for information relating to currency policies, cash management, and legal tender issues, rather than unverified reports circulating on social media or other unofficial platforms. Financial analysts noted that timely clarification from the apex bank helps prevent unnecessary panic, protects economic activities, and strengthens confidence in the nation’s monetary system. The CBN reaffirmed its resolve to promote a stable and efficient payment system while supporting financial inclusion and seamless commercial transactions nationwide. Nigerians have therefore been advised to continue using the ₦100 banknote without hesitation as part of the country’s officially recognized legal tender.
